The Process

Becoming a Driver

from Start to Finish //

Would you like to become a bus driver for the Vermilion Parish School system, but aren't quite sure of what you'll need to do in order to achieve that? Listed below is a basic layout of the steps you'll need to take in order to become a driver.

  • Take the required 32 hour "Coaching the Bus Driver" and "Defensive Driving" courses, offered for free here. Watch this website for announcements on future class dates, or contact me for more information.

  • Upon completion, go to the DMV and take four required tests. They are (1) Class B license, which consists of general knowledge, (2) "P" passenger endorsement, (3) "S" school bus endorsement, and (4) Air Brakes.

  • After passing these tests, you'll be required to take a DOTD physical and drug screen. These services are offered at Gulf Regional in Abbeville.

  • Return to the DMV with your test results, after which you will be issued a Certified Learner's Permit. This permit is good for six months.

  • You should then meet with a certified instructor, who will work with you on how to perform a Pre-Trip inspection, perform proper back up maneuvers, and prepare for your Driving Skills test. Once the instructor feels you are prepared, they will take you to the state examiner in Lafayette.

  • Once you pass all parts of the exam with the state examiner, you will be issued your CDL license and will be certified to drive! Congratulations!
